The Yazoo City Alumnae Chapter was granted the 30th chartering of a chapter in the state of Mississippi within the illustrious organization of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. on February 2, 1997.

Francine Wallace and Edwina Fox had the idea to create a chapter in Yazoo City in 1997. The duo placed an article in the local newspaper in search of additional interested sisters. Other Delta women in the area quickly responded, desiring to continue the mission of service while utilizing the Five Point Programmatic Thrust of the largest sorority in the world.

This group of dedicated women worked with the then Southern Regional Director, Dr. Deborah C. Thomas Mississippi’s leadership team and the National office of the sorority to achieve this objective. Delta members who were residents of the Yazoo City area traveled to the Mississippi State Cluster to share the need of a chapter in their community. One focus included the high rate of teenage pregnancies in Yazoo County. At that time, it had the highest rate in the state of Mississippi.

As community leaders, the ladies continued their dedication to fighting this devastating trend. On their second attempt, Dr. Thomas, the Southern Region Director; approved the chartering of the Yazoo City Alumnae Chapter. On February 2, 1997, at the St. Stephen United Methodist Church, 12 members (shown below) stood and committed themselves to carry out the public service mission of their beloved sisterhood throughout Yazoo County. Thus, was the beginning of the Yazoo City Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
